Some of them are clear – Reuenthal’s name gets mentioned a lot, and he’s got a distinctive visual feature – his heterochromia. Same with Oberstein and his cybernetic eyes (because he was blind from birth). But other than that – at one point I confused Wahlen and Kessler.

That series was a more conventional sports anime – closer to something like Hajime No Ippo/Fighting Spirit. This year, we got what I believe is our first dedicated girls Judo anime in quite some time – Ippon! Again – a series which follows in the wake of the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things sport anime series of the past (like Pride of Orange), so I was interested to see how this new show bears out. Not to put too fine a point on it, this is a series that starts a little too slowly, and then once it gets started, doesn’t feel like it goes very far. Some of that slow start is necessary – we need to set up this particular variety of portal fantasy – this is a universe where the world is menaced by portals to dungeons that have monsters in them, which will emerge to wreck havoc if the dungeon isn’t beaten. Fortunately, some select people have awakened to supernatural powers that will let them fight those monsters.

If you’d read my review of Area 88, you may recall that I gushed over the gorgeously depicted dogfights in that show. Since then I’ve been looking for something that scratched that itch. Not necessarily with the amount of grit that Area 88 did – but still, something that had exciting, tense fighter dogfights. The Winter 2018 anime season brought me the thing that I’d been waiting for. Specifically, it brought me The Magnificent Kotobuki, from the writer and director of Shirobako and Girls Und Panzer. Now, the series had some difficulty taking off for some fans because of the stylistic choices the director made.

That said, some of these episodes get really weird (again, the surrealist Gekiga tribute). It gets somewhat to the point that it almost feels like Oshii has had thirty years of wacko comedy ideas stuck in his brain, that he’s been unable to use because of his focus on serious animation (or because the films were in live-action), and has now finally been able to let that out.

However, once it got airborne, in my view The Magnificent Kotobuki became a fantastic action anime. This leads to some degree of comedy ultimately leading to Sensei coming up with a piece coming out of it. Take the admiral with the long, neck-length hair parted at the middle and a mustache. We get his name every now and then, but unless you remembered, could you tell me who he was without looking him up first?

Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie: Anime Review

The series is set in an apocalyptic future, where much of human civilization has been crushed by an unspecified disaster (at least as shown in the anime thus far), with humanity in the process of picking up the pieces with varying degrees of success. This is complicated by creatures known as Hiruko – mysterious man-eating monsters with various powers. Kiruko is transgender, but not in the normal sense – he was born Haruki, and tried to save his go-kart racing sister, Kiriko, from a Hiruko attack, ultimately leading to an accident that nearly killed both of them, and leading to a mysterious doctor putting Haruki’s brain into Kiriko body. The horror elements are heightened by the next-time narration, by the character of Sakura, the esper who is an important part of the supporting cast. She gives a quiet, frightened narration about the absolutely horrible gruesome ways we’re going to die by the next episode’s threat. It does a really great job – particularly when binging – of keeping the mood in the right creepy tone.

It requires purpose, pacing, and a few shortcuts to save time. If you’re a student or casual fan looking to write anime reviews without sinking hours into the process, here’s a guide that balances passion with efficiency. On the other hand, however, there’s how the show handles the frequent backstory and historical infodumps from the original novels.

Familiarize yourself with the various subgenres, such as shounen (targeted at young boys), shoujo (targeted at young girls), seinen (targeted at adult males), and josei (targeted at adult females). If you absolutely must have spoilers, mark your review accordingly! The only excuse I can think of for including spoilers would be a main character death in the first episode, but even then I would try to write around it. With a solid structure, focused points, and some time-saving shortcuts, you can turn any anime binge into a publish-worthy review – without staying up all night.

This should be reviewing 101 but for so many people it isn't. Asides from providing context for your statements and giving any potential critics of yours instant answers, most of all it provides colour and personality to your review that makes it more memorable. The voice acting was bad as the main heroine sounded like she inhaled helium before every take. The main character sounded like he was incredibly bored by everything as though he just wasn't that into his job and was dreaming of doughnuts while recording. Your review is instantly more entertaining and informative now. Saying the voice acting was like someone repeatedly vomiting in your ear might be funny, but it's not particularly informative.

Your writing will only improve through practice and in writing about anime, it will force you to think more about the anime you're watching, which in turn will make your reviews more interesting. One of the things Hiroaki Samura’s manga was known top 10 movies for was intensely violent and detailed action scenes. These were accompanied by some additional sexual violence, though not as regularly.
